Copyright is a legal right that protects an original work. It gives the person who created the work, or whoever owns the right, control over how the work is copied, published and exploited, and the ability to prevent others from copying it without permission.
Copyright disputes usually turn on ownership: who created the work, under what arrangement, and what rights were actually transferred. Work produced by employees, contractors or collaborators can leave the ownership position less clear than a business assumes.
The commercial consequence is direct. A business that cannot show it owns the rights in its content, software or creative assets may be unable to enforce them, license them or sell them.
